Necessary Indulgences

August 13th, 2009
It’s true- had you asked me then what these definitions were, I’d tell you something like, “Indulgence is to experience something that is not needed; an extra in life; a luxury- like massage; Necessity, then, is something that I must have in order to live- like air and food.” Fast forwarding to the present, and now looking back, I’d say that massage falls under a Necessity- “really?” you say, “how so?” First off all, another awesome lesson I was introduced to in massage school was the importance of self-care. If you remember the previous article on touch, it discussed how our stressed induced world is becoming so advanced, we barley have to ask questions to another human being, we can just google it! In my opinion, it is more important NOW than ever before to receive massage, whether it’s to relax, rehab an injury or detox, massage can now be put in the category of health care and removed from the category of luxury- I mean, isn’t it a good sign that some doctors are endorsing massage, some health care providers are covering massage, and there is a massage studio on every corner-massage studios are the Starbucks of the wellness community! So, while some may still consider taking 60 minutes for themselves indulgences, many are coming to believe that which I do- massage is a part of our life-maintenance and it allows me to thrive (and not get jealous of my clients) Just like we must take our car to the shop to get that oil change and tune-up, our bodies also need that tune-up and adjustment. And really, with all the lists of benefits I’ve offered you in previous articles, massage as a necessity really comes down to what your definition of self-care is and how you choose to value yourself. Our bodies are our temples- let’s treat them like one. No more making excuses. Massage is a necessity and why not enjoy this part of our life-maintenance?!
Note: other indulgences of Autumn: eating Jelly Bellys and Dark Chocolate. My argument for this “necessity….” well, I love them! :)

The Power of Touch

Understanding the Body-Brain Connection
By Cathy Ulrich
Originally published in Body Sense magazine, Spring/Summer 2006. Copyright 2006. Associated Bodywork and Massage Professionals. All rights reserved.

Whether in giving or receiving, touch is as essential to human survival as is food. Infants deprived of touch, even when they are getting adequate nutrition, will fail to thrive. Elders isolated by loss of partners and friends become depressed not only because of the absence of social interaction, but also because of the simple loss of being touched.

We calm our pets by stroking them, we greet each other with a hug or a handshake, and we soothe our children by holding them. No other form of connection is as powerful and universal as touch.

Skin and the Brain The adult human lives inside an envelope of about 18 square feet of skin. Every square inch houses thousands of nerve endings and various kinds of sensory receptors, all working to tell the brain about its surroundings. The cold of an ice cube, the softness of a cat’s fur, a warm breeze, the caress of a loved one — all of these feelings are possible because of our skin. Oil versus water, hot versus cold, dull versus sharp, wet versus dry — our skin tells us about our environment and ourselves. When we touch something with our fingers, we’re not only sensing the object, we’re also feeling our own skin, our own boundaries.

Touch and Adults Ongoing research by The Touch Research Institute continues to prove that massage is an important therapy for many conditions. After a massage, levels of the stress hormone cortisol drop in saliva tests, examinations show an improvement in alertness and relaxation, depression scores decrease, and mental focus improves.

The exponential growth of the bodywork field is a testament to the value of safe, therapeutic touch. Of course bodywork can play an essential role in the healing of specific chronic or acute orthopedic conditions, but it also serves as a powerful aide in improving the quality of life for adults.

My client, Stan, was going through a nasty divorce. His wife of several years announced that she no longer loved him. He had friends to support him emotionally, but it seemed that the thing he missed the most was the nurturing touch of his partner. When he finished his Rolfing series with me he seemed anxious about leaving my care. I recommended that he continue getting regular massages with a massage therapist. “It’s really important that you get regular therapeutic touch through this process and, of course, keep working with your counselor,” I said. A few months later, he called to give me a report: “I’m so glad you recommended Doris. I’ve seen her weekly while continuing with my counselor. We both agree that the massage has made the difference in helping me to get past all this. I would have never realized how important massage was had you not suggested it.”

We often equate the need for physical closeness with the need for sex, but anyone who’s been in a close, long-term relationship understands that as time goes by sex becomes less frequent, however the need for nurturing touch remains strong. For those not in a relationship, massage can be a healthy way to get that much-needed human contact.

Touch and Children Those early statistical studies showed how vital touch is to developing infants. Researchers are also finding that giving massage to premature infants can improve their growth and overall health. A study conducted by the Touch Research Institute (TRI) at the University of Miami found that when stable premature babies were given five, one-minute massages a day, they gained 47 percent more weight than their counterparts who didn’t get massage.

While most infant studies involve preemies, a 2001 study conducted by TRI showed that when mothers gave their infants a 15-minute massage before bedtime, these sleep-challenged kids went to sleep more quickly and were more alert during daytime hours. The list of studies goes on and on, but what’s most important to remember is that infants need touch to develop healthy nervous systems.

As kids grow up, they continue to need touch. Many school systems forbid teachers from touching kids for fear of litigation and the busy lifestyles of kids and working parents often keep kids from getting the touch they need. Touch deprivation may lead to early and inappropriate sexual activity or inappropriate peer touching instead of wholesome touch from parents, grandparents, teachers, and friends. The 1980′s advertising campaign “Have you hugged your kid today?” still has relevance when viewed from this perspective.

Clinical research and sociological studies link touch deprivation with aggression. A 2002 study reported that adolescents with a history of aggressive behavior showed less aggression and were less anxious after receiving a 20-minute massage twice a week for five weeks. Massage also reduces the symptoms of Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder so kids can concentrate better, and it’s even been found that the right kind of touch can help kids with autism relate better to teachers and family members.

Not only do we need to touch, we need to be touched. In the early months before babies learn about their hands, feet, toes and fingers, they need the touch of parents, caregivers, and family to develop. We retain that need our entire lives. Remember to savor touch the next time you’re lying on a massage table. Your therapist is not only working out tight muscles, she’s contacting your entire nervous system, communicating with you, calming you through pathways that were put in place before you were born.

Massage, A Form of Dance?

July 29th, 2009

The top 5 biggest connections between massage and dance for me: body awareness, expression, breath, letting go and trust.
One of my biggest transformations in massage school was the heightened awareness I got of my body. I didn’t realize how disconnected I was from myself. I lived so much in my head alone dealing with thoughts, would- ofs, could-ofs and should-ofs. Once I started getting bodywork, I realized my arms, legs, belly and feet were a part of me too! I began to feel and BE a whole person! Dancing has been all about body consciousness for me- moving to the varying beats and rhythms, moving just certain parts of my body…EXPRESSION of who I am in that very moment. I read a quote the other day from a beloved dancer Merce Cunningham,”You have to love dancing to stick to it. It gives you nothing back, no manuscripts to store away, no paintings to show on walls and maybe hang in museums, no poems to be printed and sold, nothing but that single fleeting moment when you feel alive.” One could claim a bodywork session is just this too. Through this expression and this greater presence to myself, I really got in tune with my breath- how shallow or deep it can be, how it can help me move through the session and power me through the dance! I have begun to allow my breath to move me…and in this movement comes a letting go. A letting go of of the tension I’m feeling in my body or the body,a letting go of the day I experienced that challenged me and/or inspired me. Learning how to let go in a massage session, giving or receiving, and in the dance, truly is teaching me to, well, at the risk of sounding corny, not to sweat the small stuff.
But then most of all, TRUST. Massage and Dance have taught me to trust and be trusted. How deep! Seriously though, it is an honor that individuals trust me to work with them in session; in the salsa dance, I have to trust my partner to not drop me and be with me. I can’t dance alone. It seems fitting then, that individuals have told me that the massage session they received from me, well, it was like I was dancing with their body. And to that I reply, I was. This dance, these dances have transformed my life and I expect will only continue to do so.

This month SASS spotlights: BUSINESS THE FEMININE WAY

Introducing Sonya Davis, owner of Business the Feminine Way and Soma Vida. She is the marketing mama that helped bring my authentic self into my brand, website and business. She totally helped me SASS it up!
She created Business the Feminine WayTM principles, tools and techniques she crafted over 10 years as a writer, work/life balance coach, marketing maven and her own self-discovery. Her unique tools provide a pathway to discovering and unleashing your authentic self. She then draws that essence into the foundation of your business’ design and marketing.
I asked Sonya where she discovered the vision for her business and her reply was,

“I have seen that most businesses fail because owners are unable to unlock their own personal obstacles, blocks and limitations. Without knowing the authentic core of the business and creating the magnetism to attract clients, opportunity and abundance, the business will continue to “work harder” and produce little results for a lot of effort. This isn’t working anymore, and we are putting our personal lives, our authentic self and our families in jeopardy. We are finding ourselves unfulfilled and impoverished physically, emotionally, mentally and spiritually,” says Sonya.
“I am ready to see individuals thrive in every area of their lives and that starts by knowing who they are and aligning their business and life with their authentic self.”

She is creating an AWESOME paradigm shift in the way we create business and I am just one example. See more about her at www.businessthefeminineway.com.

Massage for Children
Those early statistical studies showed how vital touch is to developing infants. Researchers are also finding that giving massage to premature infants can improve their growth and overall health. People confined to nursing homes rarely get more than daily hygienic care in terms of touch. Yet elders need touch as much as infants, studies show that when they receive regular massage, the elderly have less depression and anxiety, experience better physical coordination, and show a decrease of stress hormone in their saliva.

Geriatric massage is a growing field requiring specialized training, and many massage therapists offer it in their practices. Some nursing homes now provide massage to their residents. Elders appear to respond as well to bodywork as, if not better than, their younger counterparts.Moving Through Life

Exercise As Medicine

Krucoff, who co-wrote the book with her husband, Mitchell, a Duke University cardiologist, advocates movement as preventive medicine, saying it’s an ideal way to combat the increasing number of inactivity-related health conditions such as heart disease and obesity. This could actually be expanded to include stress-related conditions. In fact, it’s often this combination of inactivity and increased stress that wreaks havoc on our immune system, endocrine system, and circulatory system. Every system in our body, in fact, responds to stress and inactivity. But, if this is true, then the inverse is also true: every system in our bodies will also respond to movement and pleasure. To make movement pleasurable and to use it as a way to reconnect with our bodies is, in many ways, the perfect antidote to the cycle of inactivity/hyperactivity and stress. As we move more in this way, we gain energy and health, we feel rejuvenated and relaxed, and we become more physically and emotionally aware.

Personal Health
Begin by checking in with yourself as you’re moving through your day: How does your body feel right now? How are you breathing? Where is this movement taking you? Do you feel good? Are you satisfied? Are you happy? If not, then change something. Change how you’re moving, where you’re moving toward, or look at what you’re moving away from.
