Lauren Hubele, owner of Bona Dea Baking Company, has created a vision for the company which fuses her personal passion for healing foods and baking. Bona Dea Baking Company currently produces a line of whole grain, gluten free baking mixes which are sold through Whole Foods Markets, Wheatsville, and online . The production of nutrient dense baking mixes for the gluten free community naturally evolved from the original baking company Lauren first created eighteen months ago.

Over the past eighteen months, Bona Dea has evolved from an online shop with “baked to order” delivery service to a growing production of gluten free baking mixes now available nationwide. The leap of faith into the gluten free arena from conventional wheat based products was an interesting and unexpected turn for the company. Based on personal research for her own health, encouragement from her gluten free friends, and advice from her family naturopath, Lauren changed the company product line over one weekend. The unprecedented jump in sales affirmed the decision. However as volume increased some decisions regarding scaling were required. The baking mixes seemed a natural solution with a goal to serve a more widespread population.

Being a cancer survivor certainly has played a key role in the shaping of the Bona Dea as Lauren’s foremost goal is to support her customers with foods that nourish the body and soul. She also believes the most important gift she received from facing cancer has been to have the courage and commitment to live life to its fullest each day. This belief is clearly infused into the vision and daily operations of this emerging company.

What is on the horizon for Bona Dea?? A wider product line of whole grain gluten free products and the local production of flours for those products.

It’s that time of year again – time to get down and dirty with a thorough spring cleaning. Our homes have been shut up all winter and most are in need of some freshening.

This year, give your house a green spring cleaning by avoiding dangerous chemicals and harsh cleaners. Thereare healthier ways to do it – for you and the environment.

Did you know that indoor air pollution in our homes can be as much as 100 times worse than outdoor air pollution? Most of that pollution comes from the evaporation of VOC’s (volatile organic compounds) or the “off gas” from cleaning supplies, air fresheners, and home decorating items like paint, wallpaper, and carpeting. While we think we’re cleaning and disinfecting our homes, we’re really loading the air with toxic chemicals.

5 Tips for Green Spring Cleaning

1. Open the windows. The best way to get dirty air moving out and fresh air moving in is to open the doors and windows. Feel the breeze.

2. Skip the air fresheners. Chemical fresheners can cause eye, skin, and respiratory irritation. Aerosol air fresheners are even worse – the tiny air-borne particles can damage nerves and lodge in your lungs. Buy fresh flowers in lieu of traditional air fresheners. An open box of baking soda, cedar blocks, and dried flowers also add natural fragrance to the room.

3. Use vegetable-based cleaning products instead of harsh chemical cleaners. Vegetable-based cleaners, like those made with coconut oil, are becoming more popular every day. Even the makers of Clorox have a vegetable-based cleaning line on the market. Choose vegetable-based dishwashing detergent, too. (I just learned that traditional dish detergent is made from petroleum. If every family replaced just one 28 oz. bottle of petroleum-based dish detergent with a vegetable-based product, we could save 82,000 barrels of oil.)

4. Vinegar & Baking Soda. Nature’s cleaning miracle, vinegar can be used to clean just about anything. Use it straight to clean kitchen floors or wash windows, mix it with baking soda and essential oils to clean sinks, and even use it to remove stains in your carpet. Get some baking soda, too. Multi-purpose baking soda can be used for everything from freshening the air, to freshening the carpet or furniture, to scrubbing the toilet and tub.

5. Use natural fiber sponges and rags to do the cleaning. Avoid using paper towels and other one-time use tools.

What exactly is hypnosis? While definitions can vary, the American Psuchological Association describes hypnosis as a cooperative interaction in which the participants responds to the suggestions of the hypnotist. While hypnosis has become well-known thanks to popular acts where people are prompted to performs unusual or ridiculous actions, the technique has also been clinically proven to provide medical and therapeutic benefits, most notably in the reduction of pain and anxiety. It has even been suggested that hypnosis can reduce the symptoms of dementia.

When you hear the word hypnotist, what comes to mind? If you’re like many people, the word may conjure up images of a sinister stage-villain who brings about a hypnotic state by swinging a pocket watch back and forth.

According to John Kihlstrom, “The hypnotist does not hypnotize the individual. Rather, the hypnotist serves as a sort of coach or tutor whose job is to help the person become hypnotized” While hypnosis is often described as a sleep-like trance state, it is better described as a state characterized by focused attention, heightened suggestibility and vivid fantasies.

What Effects Does Hypnosis Have? The experience of hypnosis can vary dramatically from one person to another. Some hypnotized individuals report feeling a sense of detachment or extreme relaxation during the hypnotic state, while others even feel that their actions seem to occur outside of their conscious volition. Other individuals may remain fully aware and able to carry out conversations while under hypnosis.

Experiments by researcher Ernest Hilgard demonstrated how hypnosis can be used to dramatically alter perceptions. After instructing a hypnotized individual to not feel pain in his or her arm, the participant’s arm was then placed in ice water. While non-hypnotized individuals had to remove their arm from the water after a few seconds due to the pain, the hypnotized individuals were able to leave their arms in the ice water for several minutes without experiencing pain.

What Can Hypnosis Be Used For?

The treatment of chronic pain conditions such as rheumatoid arthritis.

The treatment and reduction of pain during childbirth.

The reduction of the symptoms of dementia.

Hypnotherapy may be helpful for certain symptoms of ADHD.

The reduction of nausea and vomiting in cancer patients undergoing chemotherapy.

Control of pain during dental procedures.

Elimination or reduction of skin conditions including warts and psoriasis.

Alleviation of symptoms association with Irritable Bowel Syndrome

Can You Be Hypnotized? While many people think that they cannot be hypnotized, research has shown that a large number of people are more hypnotizable than they believe.

Fifteen percent of people are very responsive to hypnosis.

Children tend to be more susceptible to hypnosis.

Approximately ten percent of adults are considered difficult or impossible to hypnotize.

People who can become easily absorbed in fantasies are much more responsive to hypnosis.

If you are interested in being hypnotized, it is important to remember to approach the experience with an open mind. Research has suggested that individuals who view hypnosis in a positive light tend to respond better.

The holidays bring opportunities for all sorts of fun activities and inspiring events. While I’ve never been particularly traditional, I view the holiday’s as an opportunity to experience new things- in years past, I’ve actually been out of the country exploring on trains, planes and buses. Like last year, some holidays have been more low key. My boyfriend and I took a road trip to New Mexico to visit friends. We relished in this time to relax harder, sleep late, mountain bike in the snow and break bread with great friends. We had an awesome time. I am always amazed at how a change of scenery can really refresh me, regardless whether it’s 2 days or 2 weeks.

Also, you will notice a delicious looking gingerbread house in the accompanying picture. My Little Sister and I explored the world of holiday crafts. Neither of us had ever built one before- it was totally fun and totally delicious <she told me so. She ended up taking it home and eating it J>

This year, the holiday will once again take a luxuriously mellow pace. Come January, there’s the possibility of spending time in a cabin at Palo Duro Canyon- quiet, relaxing and surrounded by nature. I can’t wait. So, regardless of how you choose to spend your holiday time this year, may it be relaxing and filled with good laughs and close family & friends. Happy Holidays everyone.

Location: My House
Time: the week before Halloween, after PM
The Story:
The roommates & I had just finished dinner. We were sitting around the table catching up, relaxing when all of a sudden, we were abruptly interrupted by a very aggressive knock on our front door. Startled, we looked at each other curiously. No one was expecting visitors. One of my roommates walked to the door and asked, “Who is it?” with the door still closed. There was NO response. We commented how unusual such an experience was and as we waited, still hoping for a delayed response, our eyes nervously darted to and from one another. “It sounded like how a cop would knock..but they would have said something..” one of the gals commented.
One of us asked again, “Who is it?” Again..no response…
Then, one of the gals returns to the living room with a tennis racket convinced that there’s trouble ahead preparing to open the door.
She flings open the door and shouts, “Who’s there!?”
Still, no one answered, not a sound..only our dark and deserted front porch.
All our eyes dart back and forth as she quickly flicks on the porch light.
Nothing. We were seriously freaked out by this time. Not knowing what we should do we contemplated varying possibilities….until
She looks down at her feet, and at the foot of the door, what does she see? A Halloween basket filled with goodies and a note saying, “You’ve Been BOOed!” A Halloween trick that certainly scared us good!

Following you will find the History of the BOO:

The air is cool, the season fall,
Soon Halloween will come to all.
With ghosts and goblins, spooks galore,
Trick-or-treaters at the door.

The spooks are after things to do.
In fact, a spook brought this to you.
The treats that come with this short note
Are yours to keep. Enjoy them both!

Excitement grows when friends like you
Will copy it and make it two.
Neighbors will have smiling faces;
None can guess who “BOO-ed” which places.

A day or two to work your spell,
But keep it secret! Hide it well!
Join in the fun; the season’s here.
So spread these “BOOs”-and share the cheer!
Please keep the BOO going by following these
directions:

Enjoy your treat!
*Place the BOO sign on your front door
or a visible front window
*Within the next two days, make two
copies of this note and two more BOO
signs. (Get free BOO printables at
Print Ur Own Boo)
*Make two treat bags or BOO baskets
*Secretly deliver to two neighbors without a BOO
*Keep an eye on nearby front doors to see
how far and fast it spreads by Halloween

Do You Trick or Treat?
HAVE A HAPPY & SAFE HALLOWEEN!

Behind me are bouncy balls, stuffed animals and all sorts of random other toy-goodness! I should probably go play in Toy Joy more often because it is SO fun. My inner child really gets a kick out of playing with all the knick knacks you can find in there (like the sparkly awesome sun glassed I’m wearing!). When I do go, I’m usually looking for a funny gift for some great friend of mine. Funny gifts are great gifts. I find inspiration in places like Toy Joy- it gives me the opportunity to be silly for a while and expand my imagination! Behind every toy I often find another even more amazing toy! It often turns into a toy treasure hunt. I think, if we all took the time to play in toy stores more often (and let go of our adult seriousness for a second) the world would be a better place!

I actually used to run on the trail around town lake. I would run a few miles early in the morning and then take a dip in Barton Springs. It was a totally refreshing and amazing way to start my day! Then, I started really getting into dancing and my running career was replaced with salsa-ing. So while my running career may have fallen by the wayside, I do always enjoying taking my furry friend Lola (pictured) to the greenbelt to run! She lives for the greenbelt. Seriously! Four years ago, my boyfriend found her off the trail as the tiniest puppy when he was out mountain biking. Who knows how she got there, but she sure is right at home on the trails of Austin! When we go down to the greenbelt, it’s like she’s taking us for a run! She is bounding through the brush and then running back to us at full speed as if to say, “come on guys, you’re to slow!” It’s just really great to see her play all free and wild- like! Just like the newsletter said earlier this month, “Running like a wild man or woman (or animal) through the woods nurtures the soul. “
